Tegentonen's final stand...

Well, Tegentonen is done. It has been for a while, since our final show aired in november last year. I remember walking in at this city's local radio station one day in 1997. I had the idea of creating playlists for the station's day time radioshows. During the conversation with one of the stationmanagers they offered me the chance to take a shot at doing my own radioshow. There was a timeslot open on saturdaynight. So, without any experience in the field I went into the studio and with some help recorded a test-show. I called it REVERB 2000 and played a few tracks. I can't really remember what I played, except a track from WARZONE, whose singer had recently died.

Weeks passed without any reaction from the station. I went about my business thinking it just wasn't going to happen. A few months later though I got a call back. And in februari I started the show. The title was changed form REVERB 2000 to TEGENTONEN. Without any previous experience the first few months were extremely poor, I guess. It gradually got better. Not just me hosting it, but the music as well. Man, we played all kinds of genres.
Internet was growing and I built a webpage (old school in HTML). It got me responses from all over the world. I remember a Belgian singer living in the USA contacting me and sending me his cd. Or a bluesband from Chicago sending me their debut-cd. It was a big deal to me. Most important thing for me, was that this show was always about the music. We never did any interviews, we just played records. Oh, with two exceptions in 1998 when I and my colleague Iwan went to interview AGNOSTIC FRONT and DROPKICK MURPHYS. The show featured a lot of punkrock and hardcore back then.

For the next 13 or so years I made this program. Never alone though, always with a studio technician. After a year or two with an ex-vet who later ended up as a cameraman for gayporn-movies(!), my friend Iwan took over. Iwan was also part of the team that made (and still make) the (hard)rock & heavy metalshows for the station. Their show, Als Het Maar Hard Is (As Long As It's Loud) is actually this country's longest running rock&metalshow. In between songs we always had a lot of fun talking about politics, shitty tv-shows, movies and whatnot.

The decision to quit wasn't an easy one to make. But I did in late 2011. I'm going to miss playing you all my favorite records and I'm gonna miss those saturdaynight hangouts. My last show featured some of my all-time favorite artists like Nirvana, Tindersticks, The Smiths, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds and The Stooges. My friends from Als Het Maar Hard Is bought me a bottle of excellent whisky. It was fun. Thanks for reading. Thanks for listening...

After 14 years of doing this show, I've decided to quit. RTV Arnhem is reorganising which forced me to look at my program and decide what to do with it. In the end I still love the music and the hangout with my friends at Nozems & Als 't Maar Hard Is (which would mean As Long As It's Loud if I would translate it), but over the years my weekends were often overbooked, which made me either miss a lot of shows or just do one without the proper preparation. So, when episodes sounded rushed, it probably was because they were. Even though I love to do it, I just can't seem find the time anymore.

Saturday 26th of november will be the final broadcast. There are a few more shows left, before it's curtains and I'm doing my best to make these count. Last night was an episode I truly enjoyed. Even though we had a few problems in the studio, which caused a bunch of problems, I think I managed to bring you some of the coolest bands around, including Liquor Store, Mind Spiders, Night Beats, The UFO Club and the brand new single from Lefties Soul Connection (a free download, courtesy of Top Notch records; check the playlist).

How do you celebrate the 20th anniversary of Nirvana's Nevermind? Well, by playing a few tracks of that deluxe re-issue that was released last week. To be specific: three versions of the same song just to show how it evolved during the course of the creative process. From rehearsal to the final version. Pretty cool. And we played a nice live track recorded in Amsterdam back in 1991. Next week is also another 'anniversary'; it's 20 years ago that the legendary Miles Davis passed away. We payed a little tribute to the man on Tegentonen this week.

Besides that, there were classics from The Ventures, Hot Snakes and an unreleased Smiths-song that you will not even find on that terribly overpriced boxset that is coming out next month.

A couple of really cool new tracks by Mogwai (they have a new EP on the way) and the mighty Seaweed (first new music in a loooooooooooooooooooong time) were last nights cream of the crop. As always there was a lot of room for (semi-)classics from Lou Reed, Ramones & Youth Brigade. I squeezed in a new Bohren & Der Club Of Gore-track too. Their new EP (with Mike Patton as guestsinger) is extremely nice.

I'm ending off these ramblings with a nice liveversion of The Feelies' Nobody Knows, one of the standout tracks from their new record Here Before. Watch it, you will not regret it. And check out the playlist below.

Good news for all you Hot Snakes-fans. The band is getting back together for the ATP-festival this december. And there's a good chance at a few more shows! Gave me a good excuse to play a track from their debut-album on Tegentonen.

Sure, I brought new music too. Charles Bradley for instance. His rendition of Nirvana's Stay Away is probably one of the best covers I've heard in a long time. More good news? Some sad news last week: singer Amy Winehouse died. Tremendous talent, troubled personal life. I played a nice version of an old Phil Spector-song as a small tribute.

Apologies for the sloppy show yesterday. Don't know if it was the holidays or the extremely shitty weather that caused it, but damn, Tegentonen sure had better moments. At least the music was great. Some gems in the shape of Dyke & The Blazers (this particular song was used by The Heavy on their single How You Like Me Now).

I also played Not Bitter, But Bored by Johnny Panic & The River Of Dreams. Doesn't ring a bell? Well, this was guitarist Alain Whyte's band when he wasn't playing with Morrissey. This song was recorded in the late nineties. Morrissey liked it and wanted to use it. The lyrics and title were altered and the song became one of Morrisseys biggest hits: Irish Blood, English Heart.

Another gem we played was an early version of Bruce Springsteens Born In The USA. Recored during the time The Boss was working on Nebraska, so quite a different take on this song.

Was there any new material? Sure, how about brand new stuff from The Men, Graveyard, Warpaint & Mogwai?!

Here's hoping for better shows. And better weather, because the summer here is more like the fall at the moment.

If I look on my calendar I see that the summer started last week. If I look out of my window however, I could swear it's the fall. After an early dry spell in april, it's been raining for most of the time over here. So, no Summertime to open the first episode of this summer, but some Electric Wizard. British band, they know all about rain over there. Seemed like a fitting opener.

It was a nice show yesterday; new music from the likes of Black Lips, The Feelies, Kitty, Daisy & Lewis and Guitar Wolf. I threw in a couple of classics from Pat Bowie, Skatalites and A Tribe Called Quest. About the latter, Michael Rapaport made a fantastic documentary about these guys called Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels Of A Tribe Called Quest. Watched it yesterday and was really impressed. One of the best musicfilms I've seen in recent years.

I know, it's been a while since this blog was updated. I have been extremely busy with DJ'ing and fighting off the flu. Makes me feel like an irregular regular on my own site and show. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed a few non-stop reruns the last few weeks.

Seems that everyone's sharing that Soundcloud-page with the new Foo Fighters-record. So I wanted to pass on that and just present the list of tunes I played last night @ Tegentonen. I really wish I could share those new Night Marchers-tunes. They're really good, but only available on vinyl. This new 7" is limited to just 900 copies, so better be fast if you want one. We played a song from that fine piece of vinyl; Thar She Blows, a real classy stomper.

Besides that magnificent piece of music, there were also great new and old songs from Dan Sartain, James Brown, Flats, Obits, Secret Sisters (a great version of Buck Owens' My Heart Skips A Beat), Man Or Astroman, Bad Religion, Agent Orange, Warpaint and James Wilsey. I spent too much time babbling in between songs (a rarity), so I had to skip Non Ho Sonno by Goblin. Will see if I can play that next episode.

I brought a lot of new records with me to the studio last night. Some of which should be out now (Obits), in april (Dan Sartain) or may (The Computers). I just had to play a track off that new Rival Schools-record. Pedals, as it is called is out now. I remember seeing this band in my hometown somewhere in I guess the early 2000s when they did't even have a record. Time sure does fly.

Furthermore I played some soundtrack-material for you from the late & great John Barry and Giorgio Moroder, whose Midnight Express theme The Chase recently got a nu-disco update courtesy of Martin Brodin. Pretty ok, if you ask me.

Record Store Day 2011 is less than a month away and the list of limited releases is already piling up. A nice piece of vinyl that is up for grabs, is Dan Sartain's Fuck Friday 7". It's an appetizer for a new cd/dvd-set which will be out on One Little Indian at the end of april. Legacy Of Hospitality, as this set is called, collects - rare- recordings by our favorite 'rock'n'roll cadaver' (as John Reis called him onstage during the last European tour) from 1999 through 2009. A dvd with a documentary is also included. The good folks at One Little Indian have placed the three tracks from that special 7" on Soundcloud. You can listen to them below. Enjoy!

Yes We Can Can

So, I played this song called Yes We Can Can on the show last saturday. The version you heard on Tegentonen was by a group called The Discoettes. I took it from a compilation called Strange Breaks & Mr. Thing. Great compilation with some really obscure and strange songs by groups you've never heard of. Indeed, I had never heard of The Discoettes before, but I like the song, so I thought about diggin' up some info. That proved to be quite a tough search. The only thing I know is that The Discoettes were from Australia and released an lp called Disco Dance Party back in 1976. Yes We Can Can wasn’t the only coversong on this record as it featured a lot of classic tunes reworked. I found their rendition of Pick Up The Pieces on YouTube, but would love to hear what these folks did with Day Tripper or Kung Fu Fighting.

Meanwhile, Yes We Can Can, the song we played, was originally written by Allen Toussaint and recorded by Lee Dorsey. It was orginally called Yes We Can and released on his 1970 album with the same title. The Meters were his backing band on that one. It sounds like this:

I bought a nice compilation today called Let There Be Funk! (Brown Sugar / BSR 1003-2) on which I found this song I played you all last saturday. This version however, was by The Pointer Sisters. Theirs is the most successful version to date. Love this live performance from '74:

Somewhat inspired by a few tweets and facebook-postings Tegentonen kinda got inspired last night. We played a lot of funk & soul. Vintage, new, black, white... It's all good. Classics/rarities from the likes of Timothy McNealy, Bola Johnson, The Meters, Tom Scott and David Axelrod mixed up with modern artists like Mayer Hawthorne, Lefties Soul Connection, The Roots and Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings.

Man, we really had a blast. We had to ditch some stuff we had planned to play for you, because we were running short on time. So, no Lee Fields, Miles Davis, Booker T. & The MG's and a few others, but since we had so much fun doing this, I'll guess these will pop up in a future episode. We'll do this again soon...

This week's show had a few fantastic live jams by the likes of Neurosis and Miles Davis. The latter has a new live-album out which was recorded in 1969 and 1970, while Neurosis' live record was recorded at the Roadburn festival in Tilburg, Holland in 2007.

La Femme - Sur La Planche-video!

One of our favorite recent tracks on the show has to be La Femme's Sur La Planche. Drenched in reverb, this up-tempo, catchy and wavey track has been one of the highligts from last year and a mainstay on our playlist. The band recently made a nice video to accompany the song which w would love to share.

We've been away for a while. Well, on this blog at least. Our radioshow has been on air, mostly non-stop the past two months. Miguel was in the studio this week and brought a lot of fine stuff with him. The new double-album from The Boss, Bruce Springsteen for instance. He played two tracks off The Promise yesterday. Anybody catch Springsteen on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon earlier this week? He played a scorching rendition of Because The Night together with Roy Bittan, Steven van Zandt and The Roots. Awesome performance. Man, We would love to see that one as a limited 10" or 7" release on Record Store Day in 2011.

Hot Snakes reunion in San Diego

So, what do you get when you have Obits and The Night Marchers touring together? A Hot Snakes reunion? Well, it is something you'd hope to see. Everyone in attendance at The Casbah in San Diego got exactly that last week. Obits' Rick Froberg teamed up with The Night Marchers' John Reis, Gar Wood and Jason Kourkounis for an encore featuring three songs from their epic debut Automatic Midnight. Apparently this impromptu reunion was something decided during the soundcheck. Sounds & looks great, check out these clips:

A damn shame, besides being way too young (43), he never patched things up with DJ Premier, we think. Saturday was Record Store Day, so we decided to do a small special around this theme... Basically, we played tracks from the limited items we did manage to score, which was actually most of the stuff we wanted in the first place. We did however miss out on Sonic Youth's Hits Are For Squares double-lp. Bummer. Speaking of bummers, Type O Negative-frontman Peter Steele died last thursday at the age of 48. Cause of death seemde to be heart failure. We are huge fans of early Type O Negative and even more so we are Carnivore-fans (Steele's band before Type O). We did a little eulogy at the start of this week's Tegentonen and played that scorching Hendrix-cover from their second album as a tribute to Steele.

All of us here at Tegentonen are shocked by the death of Jay Reatard, who died in his home in Memphis, Tennessee today. He was only 29 years old.

Our friendly Tegentonen-host Miguel Thannhauser isn't just your favorite voice on the airwaves. He has been a musicjournalist for well over ten years now publishing articles in magazines like LiveXS, Aloha, Vice, Music Maker and online @ VPRO's 3VOOR12. For LiveXS he did an interview with young Dutch rockband DeWolff. These vintage sounding kids are all still in their teens (the youngest member being 15, actually). They just released their debutalbum Strange Fruits & Undiscovered Plants, which roughly sounds like a mix of The Doors, Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple. Pretty good stuff for a band that young... ...there won't be one. Our friendly presenter Miguel 'Das Boot' Thannhauser has other obligations as a resident DJ at a place called The Move in downtown Arnhem. Starting at 11pm 'til about 2:30am he'll be spinning old, but preferably new records by The Very Best, LR Rockets, The Cribs, Justice, Wolfmother, Cyberpunkers, Editors, Jamie T, Jay-Z, La Roux, Lily Allen, Tiga and, since it's a saturday with a lot of younger kids, a shitload of obvious, corny but nonetheless very danceable tunes. And for those 5 metalheads hangin' out at the bar, there's some System Of A Down too!

Neurosis' Scott Kelly performing in an actual cave?

Wow, this sounds pretty cool to me: Neurosis' singer/guitarist Scott Kelly performing solo and acoustic in an actual cave. You'll have to go to Germany to see it however, since this special performance will take place in Iserlohn (which is near Dortmund) on january 30th 2010. We played stuff off of Kelly's most recent solorecord The Wake a lot on Tegentonen.

Apparently, this cave is actually 100 meters underground. Sounds spooky, but I can't think of a cooler (no pun intended) spot for this show.
