We've been away for a while. Well, on this blog at least. Our radioshow has been on air, mostly non-stop the past two months. Miguel was in the studio this week and brought a lot of fine stuff with him. The new double-album from The Boss, Bruce Springsteen for instance. He played two tracks off The Promise yesterday. Anybody catch Springsteen on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon earlier this week? He played a scorching rendition of Because The Night together with Roy Bittan, Steven van Zandt and The Roots. Awesome performance. Man, We would love to see that one as a limited 10" or 7" release on Record Store Day in 2011.

Anyway, besides Springsteen, we played you new and old material from the likes of Aloe Blacc, A Place To Bury Strangers, Warren Zevon, CIV, Off!, Misfits and The Thirteenth Floor Elevators. Full playlist below...

Hot Snakes reunion in San Diego

So, what do you get when you have Obits and The Night Marchers touring together? A Hot Snakes reunion? Well, it is something you'd hope to see. Everyone in attendance at The Casbah in San Diego got exactly that last week. Obits' Rick Froberg teamed up with The Night Marchers' John Reis, Gar Wood and Jason Kourkounis for an encore featuring three songs from their epic debut Automatic Midnight. Apparently this impromptu reunion was something decided during the soundcheck. Sounds & looks great, check out these clips:

Not a whole lot to report this week; we did do a small tribute to rapper Guru, who died last week. A damn shame, besides being way too young (43), he never patched things up with DJ Premier, we think. Anyway, we weren't too big on that Jazzmatazz thing (except that first record, which is pretty good), so we played some Gangstarr instead...

We also played a nice selection of new live tracks from the likes of Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, Green River and some old Big Black.

Saturday was Record Store Day, so we decided to do a small special around this theme... Basically, we played tracks from the limited items we did manage to score, which was actually most of the stuff we wanted in the first place. We did however miss out on Sonic Youth's Hits Are For Squares double-lp. Bummer. Speaking of bummers, Type O Negative-frontman Peter Steele died last thursday at the age of 48. Cause of death seemde to be heart failure. We are huge fans of early Type O Negative and even more so we are Carnivore-fans (Steele's band before Type O). We did a little eulogy at the start of this week's Tegentonen and played that scorching Hendrix-cover from their second album as a tribute to Steele.

Tindersticks interview (in Dutch)

Our host Miguel Thannhauser did an interview with Tindersticks' Stuart A. Staples last january for LiveXS Popmagazine, one of the premier musicmagazines in the Benelux. Since we feature the band heavily on Tegentonen, we thought we'd share this link with you. Be aware though, the interview is in Dutch. You could throw it through Babelfish, but we just tried that and those results weren't quite satisfying. So consider this a Dutch treat for our Dutch followers.

The band is currently on tour in Europe promoting their - fantastic - new record Falling Down A Mountain, check out the tourdates @ www.tindersticks.co.uk. Meanwhile, check out that interview right here.

So, after a two week break Tegentonen returned from a brand new studio playing the most obscure, funkiest, weirdest and downright dirtiest tunes from 70s blaxploitation movies, German soft sex-flicks and the real hardcore porn grooves from the vaults of Fantasy. Furthermore there was exotica, surf, a few familiar faces and even Captain Kirk singing a Beatles-tune. We had so much fun playing you all this stuff from era's loooong forgotten, we will definitely follow it up with more rare grooves in the near future...

Video premiere: Tindersticks - Black Smoke

A special treat for all of you. Tindersticks just released a new video for the song Black Smoke. Stylish, as we would come to expect, this was shot in Le Chien Chanceux by Jane Pollard and Iain Forsyth, who have also worked with Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds on a couple of videos (Midnight Man, Dig Lazarus, Dig)...

We'll be back this saturday + some show history

...thank you for your patience and understanding. Playlist for saturday's show will be up next sunday...

In the meantime, if you feel like having a bit of a laugh, you can check out our - really - old webspace right here. Built from scratch in pretty basic html early 2000, 2001 we would guess. That site has not been updated in about seven years. There's a few older playlists there. It is nice to see how the show developed in what it is today. You can also find some - text - interviews, pictures and links to a Cro-Mags fanpage which our host Miguel (a HUGE fan of this legendary hardcoreband from New York) built. Almost forgot to mention the - almost - complete Sam Kieth bibliography. You don't know who that is? Shame on you, one of the best comic book artists ever. Anyway, since Miguel forgot his login-stuff, he can't delete the page, so he thought it would be fun to share this Tegentonen -1.0 with all of you. Nice to see he decided to keep things concise this time around...

Playlist Tegentonen 16.01.2010

Our second show this year and a weird one it was. Besides a few new tunes by Tindersticks and Das Racist, we played a lot of Jay Reatard-material. As you probably know, Jay died last wednesday. Our way of paying hommage to this guy's material? Well, we did something we haven't done before in the 12 year history of the show: we played an entire record from start to finish. In this case: Jay Reatard's Blood Visions. Oh, and check the playlist for a link to Reatard's version of Nirvana's Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle, probably one of the last things he recorded.

01. Kyuss - Gardenia
album: Welcome To Sky Valley
02. Tindersticks - Falling Down A Mountain
album: Falling Down A Mountain
03. Das Racist - Rainbow In The Dark
check it out here
04. Jay Reatard - Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle
free download @ jayreatard.com
05. Jay Reatard - Blood Visions
We played the full record. All 15 tracks

Jay Reatard RIP

All of us here at Tegentonen are shocked by the death of Jay Reatard, who died in his home in Memphis, Tennessee today. He was only 29 years old.

To honour the guy's music which is nothing short of awesome, this saturday we'll be playing the entire Blood Visions-album on our show. RIP!
